Encounters

Divine appointments

Was thinking about John 4 this morning…the woman at the well…the Samaritan woman…her encounter with Jesus. You probably know the story, but if not grab a bible and have a quick read.

And this is what I found myself thinking…

She went to the well to fill her jars with water.

She was just doing her thing…going about her day.

Sure, she went at noon….to avoid the other women…to keep a low profile. Struggling with shame…stigmatised for her lifestyle. But that’s not really the main thing…

The thing that I found myself dwelling on was this: she wasn’t expecting to meet Jesus.

She was just going about her day.

Doing her routine.

Keeping herself to herself.

And Jesus met her.

Now, I’m not saying this will always happen, but if we are Jesus’ representatives (which we are); His ambassadors; agents of reconciliation; carriers of the good news message. If we are to called to love those people around us…those people God brings our way…then every person we meet, every person we talk to (even for a second), every colleague we zoom with; every neighbour we encounter…every single person could be God’s divine encounter for us at that moment.

Perhaps God has brought about that moment. Caused your paths to cross. Perhaps you are the person God has for that person right then.

So how about we pray that our eyes be open. How about we pray for soft hearts….a sensitivity and awareness to the people around us. How about we pray for a willingness to seize opportunities to love people well. How about we embrace the possibility that Jesus has brought about that encounter.
