John chapter 6 records a time when some of the wider group of people who had been following Jesus left him – they were struggling to accept his teaching and its implications.
Jesus then turns to the 12 disciples and asked them if they want to leave too.
And, on behalf of the group, Peter replies…
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe that you are the Holy One of God.” (6:68-69).
I love not just the simplicity of these words, but the depth of what they contain.
Pause and hear and ponder what Peter is saying…
Lord, we have thought about this.
And there is no other.
Nothing compares.
No-one compares.
You, Lord, have the words that give life.
That lead to life.
Eternal life.
We can’t find that anywhere else.
There is no other philosophy.
No other god.
Nothing.
In You there is something different.
We’ve been seeing that, sensing that, hearing that, experiencing that.
You know a while ago, when you said that your words were full of the Spirit and of Life…..?
…well, we get that. We have never encountered anyone like you.
We have never felt and hear words that contain such truth.
Jesus, to whom else shall we go?
We’d be lost.
Searching.
Blind and stumbling in the dark.
No, Jesus.
We will stay with you.
I think Peter was conveying something like that.
What about you?
Could you say, like Peter, “To whom else shall I go, Jesus? Your words are the words of eternal life.”
Folks, cherish Jesus and His words.
Delight in them.
Read them.
Hear them.
Suck the marrow out of them.
Allow His words to do His thing in you.
Surrender to Him…to them.
Obey Him…and them.
Embrace Him….and them.
And I pray you would know him more dearly, hear him more clearly, and follow him more nearly.
Love you.
Simon.
